Digital transformation strategy: 3 ways SAP IT teams can support growth

People working in office

Lately, almost every SAP IT team member I speak to is telling me that their organization has a digital transformation strategy. Things like DevOps, Agile and Continuous Delivery are top of mind. However, many are still grappling with ways to increase change velocity, maintain quality and deliver at the rate business demands.

This is not all surprising.

According to Gartner analysts Jason Wong and Elizabeth Golluscio in their May 2018, Gartner Insight, most organizations are unable to increase the velocity of their digital transformation. They are yet to institutionalize modern processes, such as enterprise agile and DevOps.

SAP IT team digital transformation strategy

In order to accelerate transformation, SAP IT teams need their own digital transformation strategy. They need to transform the way they develop SAP applications, the way they manage them, and how they integrate existing tools and processes. This includes how BAU fixes and enhancements are managed too. Most SAP IT teams are not giving enough thought to the transformational opportunities in their own sphere.

Automation strategy

Let’s take the simple idea of workflow automation as an example. It’s not a new idea. Companies like ServiceNow (one of our technology integration partners) have been revolutionizing the way we work through their unique approach to ITSM workflow automation for quite some time.

For the SAP IT team simple workflow automation can instantly accelerate delivery cycles by removing slow human touch points. Yet how many SAP IT teams have automated this basic function?

Orchestration strategy

Many too are struggling with passing information from one tool to another as various teams do their own thing within their own silos of systems and processes. Finding automated solutions that can remove or integrate these into a single source is another obvious digital transformation strategy.

Interestingly, it is estimated that less than 10 per cent of SAP IT teams that could benefit from automation or orchestration are doing anything about it. If you are not among this 10 per cent, then I would encourage you to explore your own digital transformation options.
