At a recent SAP ALM event in India, one question came up again and again, in conversation after conversation: what if you don’t want to move to the Cloud right now, or you’re simply not able to?
Sometimes it’s compliance. Sometimes it’s risk, or complexity, or timing, or just that the path forward doesn’t feel clear enough yet to commit to. All good reasons.
With the end of life for SAP Solution Manager and ChaRM getting closer, this has gone from a someday question to a right-now planning issue for a lot of SAP teams. Not everyone is on the same roadmap, and unique customer requirements often mean different schedules for Cloud ERP adoption.
On-premises, hybrid, Cloud: one size doesn’t fit all
One of the best things about events like this is that they cut through the neat, linear story you see in slide decks. Real customer transformation journeys are rarely that tidy.
Some companies are moving to the Cloud quickly. Some are running hybrid landscapes. Some are staying on ECC for the foreseeable future and just need solid governance and dependable change management for the world they’re in today.
What struck me is that the reasons these teams have always cared about strong change governance, the audit trails, the approvals, the control over exactly what reaches production, haven’t changed at all. The Cloud conversation has been layered on top of them, not in place of them. For a lot of customers, running on-premises and Cloud side by side is a deliberate sensible choice while they find the right pace, not a sign of standing still.
SAP Cloud ALM plays an important role in the direction SAP is taking, and for a lot of customers it’s exactly the right piece of their broader ALM journey. Rev-Trac integrates with SAP Cloud ALM and extends it into the specialty requirements that come with serious change control and transport management.
But the more I listened in India, the clearer it became that this was never really a story about swapping one tool for another. It’s about giving customers flexibility and choice over the long term, whatever pace they choose to move at.
SolMan end of life: keeping your change governance intact
For teams that have relied on ChaRM, replacing it isn’t just a tooling exercise. ChaRM earned its place because it gave organizations the change governance they needed and could be customized around their internal processes. Lose that and you’re not just missing a system. You’re missing the approvals chain people trust, the sign-off process auditors expect, and the visibility that lets you catch a bad change before it goes live. That’s a lot to leave to chance while SolMan winds down.
This is one of the reasons Rev-Trac comes up so often in these conversations. It doesn’t ask you to rebuild your change process from scratch. Approvals still happen the way your teams are used to. Sign-off and segregation of duties carry across. You keep the same level of governance and control over what moves and when, and the same audit trail your compliance team relies on. The parts of ChaRM you can’t afford to lose next year simply keep running, on Rev-Trac.
But that continuity is the starting point, not the finish line. The same platform that protects what you have today is what gives you the freedom to adopt Cloud ALM on your own terms, when you’re ready, rather than on a deadline someone else set.
What’s the actual difference between SAP Cloud ALM and Rev-Trac?
This was really the heart of what people wanted to know.
I don’t think the useful answer is a feature-by-feature comparison. It’s about the job each one is there to do, and where each one is designed to shine.
SAP Cloud ALM is built for the Cloud. That’s its focus, and it’s a real strength. For Cloud-centric operations, and for customers whose landscape is firmly heading that way, it’s a natural fit.
Rev-Trac is the fit when you need the kind of transport governance and approvals discipline ChaRM built its reputation on, and a good deal more besides. That means multi-level sign-off before a transport moves, segregation of duties enforced automatically, and a detailed audit trail your compliance team can hand straight to auditors.
It’s also the fit when your landscape is hybrid because the challenges you know from change management don’t stop at the edge of your on-premises systems. The same gaps in control and visibility tend to reappear across a mixed estate, and closing them consistently, everywhere, is the ground Rev-Trac is built to cover.
In practice:
- Cloud-first landscape. SAP Cloud ALM is designed for exactly that.
- Strong transport governance, approvals and audit trail. Rev-Trac, whether on-premises, hybrid, or somewhere in between.
- Hybrid landscape. The two work side by side, with Rev-Trac providing the governance and control foundation across the whole estate
And it’s worth being honest about one thing I hear a lot: the kinds of problems that make change management hard in a mixed world, the blind spots, and the gaps between systems, don’t only live in change. They show up in observability too. A Cloud-first tool is at its best on Cloud-first problems. The more mixed your landscape, the more you need something built to span all of it.
Why delaying your SAP Cloud migration isn’t falling behind
Staying on-premises for now doesn’t mean you’re behind or that you don’t want to modernize. It might be regulation. It might be commercial timing. It might just be a deliberate call based on your priorities, your industry, or what your systems depend on. Not everyone’s on the same timeline, and a good ALM strategy starts with where you are, not where someone thinks you should be.
What stuck with me from the conversations in India wasn’t a technical question at all. It was people looking for reassurance, that staying put for now didn’t mean staying stuck. That there was still a real path forward, even with a Cloud move some way off. And that strong change management didn’t have to wait for a migration date to be settled first.
That’s the message I want people to take away. This isn’t about creating fear or false choices. It’s about meeting you where you are, whatever that looks like for your business right now, and giving you room to change course as your plans evolve. If you’re considering what to do once ChaRM comes to end of life, Rev-Trac is here when you need us.
