Our customers sometimes amaze me – in a good way. Many organizations have been kicking around the agile, DevOps and continuous delivery phrases for some time now, but we haven’t seen very many execute on their plans.
Achieving (Almost) Continuous Delivery in SAP
Recently we were speaking with a long-term customer and were a little surprised that not long ago they had reorganized their teams into agile product teams. Each of these teams has the ability and authority to move their SAP changes all the way to the production systems on their own.
Of course, they have to follow a structured process in Rev-Trac. The OOPS (Overtake and Overwrite Protection System) functionality ensures that cross-system and/or cross-team changes are not accidentally overwritten or overtaken. Then the changes move to the respective production systems every 15 minutes.
That’s about as close to continuous delivery as you’re going to find in the SAP world.
Release Management
Then the conversation turned on how to incorporate Rev-Trac’s Release Management capabilities with this process so that every so often (e.g. last two weeks of the quarter) the teams could quickly switch to a “release” mode. In release mode the changes would be bundled and migrated on a less frequent schedule, which would reduce the risk during that time period.
Since Rev-Trac’s Class feature works seamlessly with Release Management, this won’t be a problem for the customer. The Class feature enables the immediate switching of a Rev-Trac strategy (e.g. approval workflow) simply by selecting a pre-configured Class value.
Accelerating Transformation
The biggest surprise to me isn’t that the customer made this transformation, but that they made it on their own, without consulting resources and in a short period of time. That speaks to their knowledge of Rev-Trac, but also the software’s flexibility and ease-of-use – that it can help customers quickly pivot to meet new business and IT requirements.
